 Field Art Centre

Group discussion

Group discussion was an exhibition held On March at Field Art Centre in Beijing by this year .This exhibition, in collaboration with the Field Art Centre, is meant to be an opportunity for new audiences to engage with a talented group of global artists. From the 30 artists selected for the Sunny Art Prize 2017, that included me, Jeongkeun Lee,Michèle Sennesael, Nina Baxter, Gillian Hyland, and Federico Odello, have been shortlisted to exhibit at the Field Art Centre.

Each of these artists will explore specific themes in their own idiosyncratic style, ranging from abstraction to digital photography. A common thread among these artists is their ability to engage with issues which, although perhaps related to specific places and situations, embody universal significance and speak to a global audience. Such issues range from migration and cultural rituals to the human subconscious in the age of digital communications.

The Sunny Art Prize was established with the aim of providing artists and communities with an international platform to exchange, express, and share culture. Additionally, it provides audiences with a space to engage with different media. It is also meant to be a collective experience, where audiences from all over the world join a selection of international artists in a democratic conversation about contemporary art and creative experiences.

The collaborative curation and installation was helpful to build my skills of curation and negotiation.  It made me consider different aspects of how to construct the whole exhibition step by step. The people in the audience were also artists, they gave us feedback immediately and then we discussed together. Also, when I listened to another artists’ presentations it helped me to build my professional skills, with examples of how to introduce artwork.

The Crypt Gallery

One that holds everything

Nov .2nd–Nov. 5th 2017

This was a group exhibition during the beginning of the MFA year 2. At the onset of preparing for this exhibition we all gathered into different groups to set the multitude of tasks that lay before us. My role in the design team was to come up with one proposal  template about the design of poster, banner ,leaflet  for our exhibition at The Crypt.  Our group communicated a number of times before we broke for summer. Feifei, the team leader  made  schedule of what each person might need to come up with the template of  poster ,banner, leaflets design for this show and chose the best one trough making vote in our  internal team .Fallowing the start of summer holiday, we had to communicate with team members via Whatsapp as i went back to china, and also because of the restriction of Chinese net ,so it is a difficult things to catch up every conversation details  which happened in our group for me. As this result, I had been assigned to the tasks of printing. I gathered information on how many leaflets, postser we need , costs of each size, and the price comparison in different print store or online store . We worked well as a group  throughout  the whole discussion period .

Since I had a view of senior show in Crypt Gallery last year ,I  started to think about what kind of work I need to make orI researched online about the construction of the church and crypt.  link with the atmosphere of the gallery itself. For my piece for the exhibition was a challenge. From last term , I was thinking about the dark atmosphere and the its specific history. At the beginning, I wanted to made a painting and installation together  ,the theme refers to death, but i couldn't find a suitable subject to paint. So i did some researcher online about the history of the church and crypt. It  used to be a place to buried dead people but now it becomes in to a gallery ,in this function ,the church was put into our commercial market to earn money . This changes  also follows the rules of developing our society. This point inspireded me to think the idea"Every old things always are replaced or developed by new things" ,which is also gives them a new appearance ,function, enven new identity to emerge in front of  our world. Following this clue ,my focus moved on to one of my previous panting  with Chinese ancient calligraphy ,and then i started to consider if I can find a way to change the tranditional form of expression for Chinese calligraphy . As oil painting   is my main media in my all works, so I wanted be consistent with my oil painting of working in the extended field of painting and installation. About the material  for making the installation that I should choose became a important aspect that I have to concert . During that times I have been to a various of gallery  and viewed  a lots of artists's work .By an occasional chance ,I viewed  a light installation by  the artist Cerith Wyn Evans. His light installation  inspired me to figure out how to made my installation.

The final  issue is hoe to instal my works. As we were told that we could not make any new holes on the wall or ceiling  at Crypt Gallery .That's a big issue for me, because my installation needs to hang on the  celling trough a number of  fishing lines .For solving this  problem ,I had have thought  a lots of  way to do it, and I visited the crypt a few times over the summer to take pictures of the interior and exterior. Finally , I decided to make a wood board instead of the ceiling .At the day when we start to instalI everyone's works , I was indeed thank for the crew members of technical  team.Their professional skill helped me to successful  hang the wood board  on the ceiling .

Trough this event I learnt ,as a group show, there existed more tough things which are waiting for us to have more discussion and more help for each other.

 Dialogue

Oct.28th ---Dec.5th 2017

October 28 of last year, the exhibition of contemporary Chinese students' art exhibitions on the theme of "Dialogue" London in London opened at the Education Department of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in London on London's Street. Mr. Wang Yongli, Counselor of the Minister of Education, Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the British Embassy, Mr. Sun Hui, Secretary of Education Department, Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United Kingdom, curator and artist Alu Lulu, outstanding artist representatives from the United Kingdom, Chen Jixuan, , Ding Hailun, Wulin Cheuk Hung, Xiong Yanwen, Ying Ming, Zhang Ziyun gathered in the curtain scene.

The exhibition, based on the "Dialogue" London - Contemporary Chinese Students Painting Art Exhibition, aims to showcase the achievements and spirit of contemporary Chinese art students and encourage the exchange of arts and culture between China and Britain. The exhibition brought together ten outstanding British art students, including Oil painting, watercolor , painting, pencil drawing

of rice paper, mixed medium painting and other works of art, sharing contemporary Chinese art students studying in the UK thinking and insights, creating a feast of visual and cultural exchanges.

It is worth mentioning that, in order to fully demonstrate the contemporary thinking and spiritual outlook of young artists studying in Britain, the exhibition adheres to the strict standards of art selection and delivery and diversifies the artistic presentation. The selected and collected artists are diverse and individualistic. They have a wealth of personal experience and unique creative experience, or in international art exhibitions and competitions to win a prize. At the same time as the top art schools in the United Kingdom, they cast their speeches to reflect the current times and world we live in, reflect the spiritual world of Chinese young artists studying overseas, and their dialogues and exchanges with the world Will and ability. This is exactly what the spiritual core and significance of the London Art Exhibition titled "Dialogue" is.

I was so grateful that I got this opportunity  as one of excellent  students who study on Art in UK to participate this Exhibition at Embassy of China.

LIFE IN A SHOEBOX

LIFE IN A SHOEBOX was an exhibition held in April this year that included all of our classmates . The show took place in Back room gallery. As this is a tinny gallery with around 20 square meters,As this result we had to consider how to use this to display this show ,and make sure it could accommodate more than 20 people 's works .I participated the discussion about how to solve this tough issue and figure out a theme for this exhibition. After that, we identified the theme which aims to explore living in cities. This theme was helpful to question our living environment. This experience was helpful to build my skills of curation and negotiation.  It made me consider different aspects of how to construct the whole exhibition  base on the space step by step .

On the PV night,  as the limited space, it  doesn't  give the audiences enough space, the atmosphere  also enhance the meaning of this exhibition . The people in the audiences were also artists, they gave us feedback immediately and then we discussed together. Also, when I listened to another artists’ presentations it helped me to build my professional skills, with examples of to know how then interpret the issue of living cities and even elsewhere of out of our planet .

 17m2 at space 272

 Group Exhibition

17m2 at space 272 was an exhibition which took place in UAL Building,272 High Holborn in June.

Working in collaboration with groups of MFA students were given the brief on May to organise and arrange the whole exhibition which is a free change to show each participating artist current work.

For this exhibition still existed a certain degree of restriction in space.I was used to create a large size of works ,as a result, I therefore fell into the restriction of exhibited work. However, under the pressure ,it gave me a strength to push myself to create .

Acquired Awards

Sunny Art Prize 2017

This year June, I participated this art competition. I submitted two of my paintings and artist website. Later on August, I was selected in shortlist and got useful feedbacks from judges; they helped me to rethinking how to write artist statement, what kind of document is professional. And then each of shortlisted artists prepared an interview to talk about work. Also we had a group show in Sunny Art Gallery .In the PV party, I had a chance to talk with judges and other artists, which was different from talking with tutor and classmates. They barely know you, so I need much more clearly and logically to speak my idea. In the end, I won this competition and got the Second prize. It gives me more self-confidence. Those valuable skills and experience can help me to build my career after I graduation.

The award -winning experience will offer me a  one month residency and a show at their partner's gallery . The award-wining work will be exhibited at Field Art Centre in Beijing,China, apart from that, there his an opportunity to display more works in my oeuvre.
